Hello and こんにちは。 My name is Shawn Clark. I will soon have a degree in Japanese Language and Culture from CSUMB.
Personal Statement
I entered into CSUMB's Japanese program in order to explore my interests in Japanese culture and language, which I had started developing in high school. I had been interested in anime and wanted to learn more about the country it came from, and what about their culture led them to create such a unique art form. I was also interested in the history of Japan- how exactly was a country that had tried to remain isolated from a rapidly changing world manage to adapt so quickly and become an economic super power?
In addition to exploring the numerous curiosities I had about Japanese culture and history, I learned the language and spent a rather successful semester abroad. While my interests and future plans have changed significantly from when I began in this major, I still feel proud of what I have learned in this program, and I will treasure the friendships I have made in both Japan and the US for many years to come.
